James Moody – 1955 at Newport

bd_James_moody_for_web1-225x300I love my Father’s stories. He told me that he was in Italy with Max Roach one year while with Miles Davis backstage. Well, to preface the story; Jazz people like Miles go all around the World, and meet lots of people, so they must simplify their reference to folks that they see regularly, but can’t always refer to their names on a dime.

So again, Dad is there with camera backstage for Miles and the crew playing that day. As Dad is setting up Miles for the shot, Miles says to Dad, “Moody, I’m not ready.” And, Dad says. “Miles. Moody is over there”. Miles says, “Not that Moody – you Moody”. Dad scratches his head, and gives Miles a look. Miles recognizes the confusion, and says, “Hey, you’re the Moody with the camera, and he’s the Moody with the horn, now I’m ready for the Moody with the camera – you’re on!”.

Whatever reference get’s the job done! And, Lionel Hampton called everyone ‘Gates’; go figure. Enjoy ‘The Real Moody’ below. – Chris Stewart
